Which foods feel best in the cold, windy (Vata) season?

By Kaya5 Team

When the weather turns cold, dry and windy, Ayurveda leans toward the opposite qualities to stay balanced: warm, moist, grounding and lightly spiced. Think cooked over raw — warm soups and stews, well-cooked grains, root vegetables, and warming spices like ginger, cumin and cinnamon. Sip warm water through the day rather than cold. Heavy, oily or very sweet foods in excess can tip the other way, so aim for "nourishing but digestible". Educational only — not medical advice; individual needs vary.

A simple rule of thumb for the cold season: if it's steaming and you'd eat it with a spoon, it's probably a good fit. Salads and cold smoothies can feel lovely in summer but drying in winter.

Ginger tea between meals is an easy way to stay warm and support digestion without adding heavy food.
