When is the best time for abhyanga (self oil-massage)?

By Kaya5 Team

Abhyanga — a warm oil self-massage — is one of the most loved daily rituals in Ayurveda. Most traditions suggest the morning, before a warm shower, so the oil warms and settles the nervous system before the day begins. A few gentle pointers: use warm (not hot) oil, work from the extremities toward the heart, and give it 5–10 minutes when you can. If mornings are rushed, even the feet and scalp before bed can help you wind down. Educational only — not medical advice. Skip oils you're sensitive to, and check with a clinician if you have a skin condition.

One practical tip: stand the oil bottle in a mug of hot water for a minute or two instead of microwaving — gentler warmth, and you won't overshoot. Sesame oil is a common choice in cooler months; coconut in the heat.

If a full-body massage feels like too much on a busy morning, even a minute on the soles of the feet before bed is calming and easy to keep up.
